Acceptance. The title is fitting for some obvious reasons. The boy in the story, Mark, yearns for social acceptance. Later in the story, he has to learn to accept his new body and emotions. However, I find that this title connects on a personal level, as I wouldn’t consider myself a ‘Brony’; I don’t watch the show, My Little Pony, and have a very limited knowledge of all the related lore and characters. Yet, here I am, reading this story despite the fact that a fair number of people in our society would tell me what I’m doing is wrong. I've accepted the fact that people have different interests than me and am not letting that fact get in the way of my enjoyment of this story.

When I read the first few chapters of Acceptance I found myself getting annoyed quite frequently. I wanted answers and I wasn’t getting them. But then, neither was Mark, and in this way, the author had managed to put me in the position of the character without me knowing it. Meatabex does this again in chapter 3, as Mark (now Leafwing) gets accused of doing something he (now a ‘she’) didn’t do. A sort of mob mentality forms, as everyone starts ganging up on him, and you feel the fear that he feels as the situation continues to escalate, until finally, a pony stands up for him, and you feel the relief that Mark feels.

The only real problem, and I use that word loosely, with this story is that it’s a fan-fiction. For some reason, it seems that the general stereotype about these pieces of literature is that they’re poorly-written works by overweight ‘no-lifers’ who still live in their parents’ basement; however, in this case that’s simply not true. This story is professionally written, has a complex plot that unfolds at appropriate times, and has noticeable character growth throughout the entire story. Meatabex uses personification to strengthen his writing and draw readers in, most notably in chapter seven. I think it’s also worth mentioning a line that shows off Metabex’s writing brilliance. In chapter seven, when a demon yells, “STAND STILL AND LET FEAR PIERCE YOUR HEART!" this has two meanings. The first is most obvious; let your fear take over your body and paralyze you, but the second requires you to read into it a little more. In this part of the story, the demon is trying to kill Leafwing; the demon is fear, so by saying, “Let fear pierce your heart!” the demon is literally telling Leafwing to let herself be killed.

This story is absolutely brilliant and a thrilling read. I would encourage anyone who hasn’t already read the story to at least try the first chapter, and if you're really not into the whole 'brony' idea, at least read the prologue. There aren't any ponies there, I promise.

Is the critique you requested for the seven parts out so far? If so, would you mind if I wrote a critique?
